The Curriculum

Academically, students at Red Maids’ perform exceptionally well. In 2016, 40% of all GCSE entries were graded A*. Well over two thirds - 70% - of entries were A* or A grade, and 89% were A*, A or B.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to develop life skills, and provide a number of challenges and opportunities, in addition to achieving these essential, external qualifications.

In Years 7 to 9 our students study a broad and balanced curriculum, preparing them well for the GCSE options process. Girls will study two foreign languages, with Latin for all girls in Years 7 and 8 and the introduction of Classical Civilisation in Year 8. We begin teaching Science iGCSE in Year 9, which provides excellent grounding for the Science examinations in Year 11. There is also a significant element of curriculum Sport and Music, which is supported by an extensive extra-curricular activities programme. Throughout this stage, we are continually developing the girls’ independent learning and academic skills.

In Year 10 and 11, most students study for anything from nine to twelve GCSEs, and all will study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, a Modern Foreign Language and Biology, Chemistry and Physics.* In addition, our unique enrichment programme allows students to explore areas outside their examined subjects, with a choice ranging from art appreciation to 'zumba', or from first aid and financial awareness to politics. There are opportunities for the very able to stretch themselves by completing additional qualifications. A wide range of additional experiences and an exciting programme of external speakers, also support our Gifted and Talented programme.

Underpinning their learning, we use a 10-point Learner Profile which was developed in consultation with the students themselves. It encapsulates the qualities that we nurture in them and so reflect the essence of a Senior Red Maid: Independent, Collaborative, Inquiring, Innovative, Problem solving, Compassionate, Open-minded, Reflective, Determined and Articulate.
