Music

Music is an important part of life at Red Maids'. It is something that brings people together and that girls of all interests and levels of musical experience can enjoy. In Years 7 to 9, during their weekly lesson, girls experience a range of music by performing, listening and composing. The girls are often taught in split classes in order to tailor the teaching towards the skills and interests of individuals; the girls study a range of topics, including Blues, Reggae and Film Music, as well as the more Classical genres.

Girls can take Music as a GCSE in Year 10, following the Edexcel syllabus, and can continue studying Music at A Level.

A large number of girls throughout the school have private, one-to-one instrumental or vocal tuition, which is provided by our team of highly-qualified visiting music teachers. This often leads to individual examinations with a range of exam boards, including ABRSM, but these are not compulsory. However, we do really encourage all of our pupils to take advantage of the many extra-curricular opportunities available. These include six choirs, three orchestras, a wind band, chamber music ensembles and groups tailored towards specific instrumental families, including a Brass Group, Flute Group, Oboe Group, Percussion Ensemble, Swing Band and a Guitar & Ukulele Group. The school even has its own community choir, which is open to the wider school community, including parents and alumni!

The musicians at Red Maids' give countless concerts every year. Aside from the several school concerts, which are often held at prestigious venues such as St. George's Brandon Hill, the girls take part in various high profile events in the city each year. This year alone this has included being a featured choir as part of the Brunel Sinfonia's Christmas Concert, singing carols at the Lord Mayor's "At Home" (something which the chamber choir do every year), being invited to sing the semi-chorus part in the Bristol Bach Choir's performance of MacMillan's St. Luke Passion at Bristol Cathedral and giving a lunchtime chamber music concert at The Lord Mayor's Chapel. The girls also go on music tours biannually, with the most recent choir tour including a sung mass at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome.

There are many other performance opportunities for the girls at the school. These include performing at high profile school events, such as the Founder's Day Service and Carol Service, as well as other events such as the Summer Garden Party, Christmas Market and Autumn BBQ. Girls can also sign up to take part in our House Music Competition or any of our termly Informal Concerts.

Most musical activities and lessons take place in our self-contained Music Department, which has a class-teaching room, large rehearsal room, practice rooms, recording equipment, and a technology laboratory with 18 workstations with keyboards and Apple computers.
