We encourage students to be physically active and to demonstrate knowledge and understanding through physical actions. We expect them to observe fair play, engage in honest competition and good sporting behaviour. We aim to develop in students an appreciation of their own strengths and weaknesses and those of others and to develop pupils’ co-operation and communication skills.
The wide range of teaching and learning styles used include pupil-led warm ups and practices, video analysis – especially at GCSE and A Level, self assessment, reciprocal teaching – observing others performing and giving feedback and a discovery style – solving problems in a variety of activities.
We have top class on- and off-site facilities, which include a large Sports Hall, netball courts, two astro turf pitches, tennis courts and extensive games fields. Our off-site facilities are based at Golden Hill and give us the flexibility to deliver a broad and exciting curriculum. Our Year 12 and 13 students also have regular access to the exclusive David Lloyd fitness club, where they have opportunities to participate in activities such as spinning, yoga and zumba, or simply use the superb facilities available.
All students in Years 7 to 11 have core PE lessons and students in Years 10 and 11 can opt to take GCSE PE or Dance, following the AQA exam board.
The department runs a comprehensive range of extra curricular activities which include lunchtime and after school clubs in activities such as netball, hockey, football, basketball, swimming, rounders, athletics, tennis, fencing and judo. There is also an extensive fixtures list after school and on Saturdays.
